Have you ever felt that gnawing sensation that you are living someone else’s life? We often force ourselves into neat, socially acceptable boxes just to pay the bills. We take the safe 9-5 job, smile through the exhaustion, and try to ignore the quiet voice inside begging for something real.

But sometimes, the pull of your true calling is impossible to ignore.

IAMLITAF! a fiercely independent hip-hop artist and producer from Shillong, knows exactly what that friction feels like. Also known as Banrap Lyngdoh, he creates music that bridges experimental hip-hop, electronic, and R&B. His art is a raw reflection of his inner world. We sat down with IAMLITAF! to explore his path to self-discovery, the realities of the Northeast Indian hip-hop scene, and how he balances the heavy weight of true storytelling with the technical demands of rap.

If you are trying to unlock your true potential and step out of the shadows, his story is exactly what you need to hear.

The Grind: From Waiting Tables to Owning the Stage

Success rarely looks like a straight line. For IAMLITAF! the early days in Shillong’s vibrant hip-hop scene were built on pure hustle. He hopped from band to band, playing solo live shows wherever he could. But passion does not always pay the rent immediately.

Eventually, the pressure mounted. He dropped everything and moved to Agra and Delhi to work as a hotel waiter.

“I became a totally different person,” IAMLITAF! recalls about his time away from the mic. Stepping away from your art can feel like putting on a mask that slowly suffocates you. The disconnect between who he was and who he needed to be grew too wide. “I eventually missed music so much, I had to quit the job.”

He realized he simply was not built for a non-creative life. Music is not just a hobby for him; it is a visceral need. He describes it as a drug. When the music stops, the silence feels profoundly wrong. By choosing to embrace his calling, he took the first terrifying step toward authentic living.

The Breakthrough: Dropping the Safe Act

We all have a moment where we finally decide to stop playing it safe. For IAMLITAF! that moment arrived with a track called Demons (also known as Save Me).

Before writing this song, he admits he was holding back. He was writing cool verses, but they lacked the raw vulnerability that makes art stick to your ribs. Demons came from a dark, incredibly honest place. It was the first time he wrote a verse that felt entirely undeniable.

This is the magic of unmasking. When you stop worrying about what people expect from you and start expressing your genuine shadow self, you connect with like-minded souls. To truly reach people, you have to be willing to bleed a little on the page.

Winning Red Bull 64 Bars: A National Stage

When you operate as an independent artist without a massive support system or a major label backing you, the noise of the industry can feel deafening. How do you make people listen?

You outwork them.

In 2025, IAMLITAF! stepped onto a massive platform and won the Red Bull 64 Bars competition. He stood out among more than 400 rappers across the country. It was a massive validation of his lifelong dream, proving that a kid from Nongpoh, Meghalaya could command a national stage.

“That taught me that at times you gotta compete in a national-level competition that is being judged in a fair manner to win what you deserve,” he explains. “If you got no support systems, you have to stand out.”

It is a powerful reminder that while talent is essential, courage is what actually puts you in the room.

Writing from the Shadows: Emotion Over Blueprints

When IAMLITAF! sits down to create, he does not follow a calculated blueprint. The rhythm and the technical sharpness are crucial, but emotion always drives the vehicle.

He describes his creative process almost like a form of possession. He lets the beat play, taps into a hidden force, and lets the words flow naturally until the connection breaks. He heavily prefers writing in isolation. When he is alone, he can unmask comfortably and face the things that society usually tries to avoid.

Expressing serious, meaningful topics without driving the audience away is his biggest challenge. We live in an era that thrives on quick entertainment. In hip-hop, beefs and diss tracks generate massive numbers because people love drama.

IAMLITAF! refuses to play that game. He has no interest in manufacturing conflict for clicks. He wants his music to carry a real message, even if forcing people to face their shadows makes them uncomfortable.

The Introvert’s Burden: Evolving Beyond the Bars

What version of himself is IAMLITAF! trying to outgrow with every new verse? The answer is brutally honest. He wants to evolve not just as a rapper, but as a complete artist and producer. He dreams of owning his own studio, controlling the mixing and mastering process to achieve absolute creative freedom.

But there is another hurdle he is actively fighting to overcome: the necessity of marketing.

“As an introverted neurodivergent person, it’s a pain in the ass,” he laughs, discussing the grueling demands of content creation. It is a highly relatable struggle. How do you protect your peace and your authenticity while playing the social media game required to survive as an independent creator?

IAMLITAF! is learning to accept that building these social skills is mandatory if he wants to keep from getting lost in the crowd. He is pushing himself to expand outside his region, perform more shows, and inspire others to dream big.

He pays his bills by making art. It is not always glamorous, and it comes with a lot of pain, but it is deeply authentic. He never gave up on the kid inside who just wanted to make music.

If you are standing on the edge of your own leap of faith, take a note from IAMLITAF!’s playbook. Stop playing it safe. Isolate the noise, face your shadows, and let your authentic voice ring out. The right people will always listen.
